Study shows economic activity of Niagara’s Winter Festival of Lights is more than 40 times its price tag
From a press release seen on the Winter Festival of Lights web site:
A detailed study of the 2009 Winter Festival of Lights found that the 59-day Festival generated $57.3 million in economic benefits for the region, more than 40 times the event’s fiscal year expenditures of $1.3 million.
In its 42-page report, Toronto-based research firm Enigma Research Corp., concludes that the 2009 Festival received more than 1.3 million visits by 413,000 unique visitors. These visitors spent approximately $57.3 million in the region throughout the festival, including $11.6 million on hotels and accommodations. The Festival contributed $34.4 million to Niagara’s gross domestic product and supported the equivalent of 646 full-year jobs in the Niagara Region.
The report is based on 600 on-site surveys conducted between November 7, 2009, and January 4, 2010, at the Festival’s lighting displays, fireworks shows, events and entertainment venues.

Niagara USA Events – December 2009
Niagara Falls USA December 2009 event listings.More Sleep Cheap 2009 information
The City of Niagara Falls also had a media release about the Niagara Falls 2009 Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap event (the release was titled 5th Annual Sleep Cheap Reservation Date Announced):
The waiting is over! Reservations for the 5th Annual Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event can be made starting Friday October 23, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. Sleep Cheap Charities Reap will take place over four nights from Monday, November 9 to Thursday, November 12, 2009. Room rates for this year are: $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a Fallsview room, $65 for a whirlpool room, and $85 for a room with access to a waterpark.
Twenty-eight of Niagara’s finest hotels will offer their rooms to Niagara Region residents only to benefit local charities. New to Sleep Cheap this year are the Doubletree Fallsview Resort & Spa by Hilton and the Niagara Falls Baymont Inn & Suites.
A few of my own thoughts/observations/questions:
- It’s good to see some new hotels participating
- Why is the Great Wolf Lodge participating? I’m sure they have their reasons, but ultimately it looks bad since they participated before
- I like the idea of some attractions participating. I wonder if in the future, attractions on Clifton Hill will be included
- I don’t think my family will be taking advantage of this at all this year
- I never did post my experience last year at the Americana. I will do so soon
- This is a fantastic promotion, and raises a lot of money for charity. Good job Niagara Falls!

Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap 2009 is here!
I’m sorry I’m a couple of hours late on this…
You can book rooms for Sleep Cheap as of 8 am this morning. There are 28 hotels participating, and a few other extras. The Niagara Falls Review reports about it this way:
It’s time!
The phone lines are now open for anyone ready to book a room during the fifth annual Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event.
Founder and co-ordinator Jim Diodati started getting calls from people over the summer – all eager to know when the hotels will begin taking reservations.
They also want to know if they’re eligible to join in.
“You have to live in the Niagara Region to take part, but I keep getting calls from Simcoe, Toronto, Buffalo and beyond,” said Diodati, a city councillor.
Local hoteliers will open their doors to Niagara residents at a reduced rate from Nov. 9 to 12.
