Parks to lead marketing group

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Tourism officials in Niagara will speak with one voice as they try to attract more marketing cash to the region.

Industry groups have agreed on a partnership they hope Ontario will accept as a regional tourism organization.

The provincial government announced the creation of 13 new tourism regions, including one for Niagara, late last year.

Agencies in each region were invited to apply to form a new co-ordinating tourism body, which would be responsible for handing out all future marketing dollars from Queen’s Park.

A week before the March 1 deadline, Niagara’s several tourism groups still hadn’t reached a consensus on who should be in charge.

That changed late last week, Joel Noden, the executive director of business development for the Niagara Parks Commission, told QMI Agency last week.

“At this point it looks like there will be only one major submission to the province, which is pretty exciting,” said Noden, whose agency was chosen to temporarily act on behalf of the proposed new Tourism Partnership of Niagara, an indep e n d e nt, non-profit agency that would be run by a board of directors.

Olympic take on Oh Canada Eh

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Thought the Olympics closing ceremonies looked familiar? If you’ve seen the Oh Canada Eh dinner show in Niagara Falls, you weren’t imagining things.

From the moose to the lumberjacks to the hockey players, the cheeky celebration of all things Canadiana was like a carbon copy of the award-winning show that has been tickling tourists since 1994.

“Anne of Green Gables was the only thing missing in their performance that’s in ours,” said an amused Oh Canada Eh vice-president Anne Robinson…

Robinson had so much deja vu watching the closing ceremonies, she wondered if the Olympic producers took in a show or two of Oh Canada Eh at some point.

Vanessa Neil, Sword Swallower, at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum

As you read on Saturday, I went to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum to see the sword swallower. This was the second year that they did it, and I thought Vanessa Neil was better than Riley Schillaci, last year’s performer. I can’t really explain what I didn’t like about Riley, but she just didn’t seem happy to be there. Vanessa was much more chatty, smiled a lot, and seemed happy to be there with everyone.

I was going to make some observations, but I thought the article in the Niagara Falls Review that I linked to yesterday got all of the main points. Also, you can read my tweets from Saturday as well.

You can see the 30-second video I took on YouTube. I forgot to bring my better HD camera, so the quality isn’t that great, but you still get a clear shot of her downing about a foot of sword in the blink of an eye. The sword was about two feet long in total.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I also took a few pictures. I couldn’t tweet, do a video, and take pictures at the same time, so I don’t have a still picture of her with the sword in her mouth. However, you can see her holding the sword, as well as the crowd that was gathered. You can also see the renovations that they are doing at Ripley’s.

You can see the pictures in the 20100227 Sword Swallower Vanessa Neil gallery in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery. As a side note, there are now 2,920 images in 238 categories in the gallery.

Bowl for Kids Sake

Big Brothers Big Sisters is like what some of you already know, an organization to help bring young generations of boys and girls to be partnered up with a volunteer brother or sister, to show those who are less fortunate of having siblings, an experience of companionship.
